Cabinet refinishing runs about $145 per linear foot of cabinet run, so a typical kitchen with 25 to 30 linear feet lands around $3,600 to $4,400. Doors and drawer fronts drive the number more than cabinet size does, and heavily used kitchens need more degreasing and sanding before anything is sprayed.

Yes, and it is one of the more common requests we get, usually when replacing stained windows or trim is not in the budget. It is not a paint-over. Every surface gets degreased and scuff-sanded, then two coats of primer with a sanding pass in between, then two finish coats. The primer is what blocks tannin bleed; skip it, or skip the sanding, and the old stain telegraphs back through within months. We do these conversions on windows, trim, built-ins, and millwork.

Usually restored. Graying is surface-level UV damage, not rot. The process is a chemical wash and a wood brightener to pull the color back, then a neutralizer, then a thorough rinse and full drying time before anything else happens. Once dry, we sand the beams and outriggers with orbital sanders and apply new stain to bare substrate. Rushing the drying or skipping the sanding is why a lot of restains fail within a season or two.

The simple version: the shinier the paint, the tougher it is and the easier it wipes clean, but the more it shows every bump, patch and seam underneath. The flatter it is, the better it hides imperfections, but the easier it scuffs and the harder it is to scrub. That is the whole trade-off, and it comes down to the mix in the can: more of what hardens, less of what hides. So you choose per room, based on how much that surface actually gets touched. Ceilings get the flattest paint, because nobody touches a ceiling and flat hides drywall seams and texture. Bedrooms and living rooms usually stay flat or matte so they feel soft. Kitchens and bathrooms step up, because steam and splashes mean you need to be able to wipe them down. Trim, doors and cabinets get semi-gloss on most of our jobs, since those take hands, shoes and cleaning. If you want to see the difference for yourself, hold a lamp close to a wall at a sharp angle in a dark room. On flat paint the light just dies. On a glossy wall every dent and seam lights up. That is exactly the trade you are making when you go shinier.
